Hot Weather - Hot Dog Sh-t

Oh for heaven's sake dog owners!!! Just because it's hot weather this week in the San Francisco Bay Area, doesn't mean you can be lazy and leave hot dog doo everywhere you can.

The heat wave this week in San Francisco resulted in an extraordinary spike in small dog poo littering. Egads! It was so bad, I had to make this my second post today.

Pick Up Poop Like Repairing Golf Divots

Image via WikipediaI picked up playing golf last December.  I've learned that it's usual and customary practice to repair an extra divot on the golf green around the flagstick.  That's to say, when I hit onto the green, it's probable that I've created a divot (an indentation in the short grass of the green). So best practice is to repair my divot (so the grass heals faster), and find another divot to repair.

In summary, I repair "my" divot, and I also repair someone else's divot.

So, wouldn't it be great if all dog owners picked up their own dog poop, plus one extra poop?!

The Dog Poop Initiative

This is really great! This book is about turning one of the things I hate a lot, dog poop,  into something good.

This year the AKC is holding its 1st virtual RDO days, 2010 AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days - Join us in celebrating the first annual Virtual AKC RDO Days!

While checking out the RDOD website, I ran across this gem, AKC Responsible Dog Owner Pet Promise. To no one's surprise, it includes:

"As a dog owner: I promise I will pick-up and properly dispose of my dog’s waste."

Now how do we get irresponsible dog owners to jump on the RDO bandwagon?

Salmonella Eggs - So What - How About Dog Poo Bacteria

However, when put in perspective, dog doo is far more talented in transmitting a greater spectrum of disease causing bacteria, fecal coliform bacteria.

Some Causes Of Dog Pooping Problems

Image via Wikipedia It might come as a surprise to some that dogs can have gastro-intestinal problems due to eating dog bones, reports this blog post, FDA Says Giving Bones To Dogs Is Unsafe.

Some of the ailments listed are:

1. Bone gets stuck in intestines and causes a blockage.
2. Constipation due to bone fragments.
3. Severe bleeding from the rectum.
4. Peritonitis.

So if your dog is having trouble 'dooing' it, there might be a reason for it.

OK, here's a little test. In San Francisco, who do you report barking dogs to?

The answer is, it depends.  According to the San Francisco Department of Health - Environmental Health - Noise Complaints:

The Police Department is responsible for all noises associated with:

• music
• parties
• noisy people
• radio
• television, and
• barking dogs

The police can be contacted at their non-emergency dispatch number (415) 553-0123, 24 hours a day. The Police Department responds to most barking dog complaints in San Francisco unless there is evidence of animal abuse. All cases of animal abuse should be directed to Animal Care and Control at 554-6364.

Wheelchair Dog Poo

This situation makes dog doo personal.

I noticed this flyer in the window of a home very close to Most Holy Redeemer Church. It reads:

"Today, I saw a woman in a wheelchair trying (in vain) to get doggie diarrhea off of her wheels before she went to church. 

And then I had a realization: All dogs go to heaven, but dog owners have to work for it -- one poop cleanup at a time.

Respect the 'hood. Clean up the mess thoroughly and we will appreciate you and enjoy your dog!"

I say Amen to that.
