Dog Poop As Fertilizer - Controversy

OK. Does anyone out there know the definitive answer?

With all the doo doo sitting at the foot of trees, I ask myself this question:

Is dog poop good or bad for trees?

There seem to be myriad answers on the internet, but nothing that feels to be the absolute answer. The closest I've seen is this, Will dog stool work as a fertilizer just like cow manure? The suggested answer is no, because dog doo doesn't have enough plant material in it, and it needs to be composted first.

Are there any experts out there that can help answer this question?

Sidewalk Doggy Diarrhea - Caught In The Act

Major ewwwww! 

I was walking home from work tonight, just minding my own business . . . and scanning for things to blog about. I noticed that there was a dog and owner about a block ahead, and that they hadn't moved for awhile. It appeared that the owner was waiting on the dog, and picking up after it.

I kept walking and stopped to take this picture. This is an award-winning smear, a remnant of a valiant dog owner trying to clean up after doggy diarrhea. I was immediately repulsed at what I saw, and a wee bit happy to add a photo to my portfolio.

... and then I kept walking, and in a few steps caught up to the dog and owner. It felt as if I had chased them off. In retrospect, I think I really did.  The owner had tried his best to clean up after diarrhea dog, and I chased him off while he was trying to scoop up smear #2.  I felt embarrassed for the owner.  He tried his best to clean up two smears, saw me coming and taking pictures, and ran off in shame.

I'm sympathetic, and I have to keep reminding myself why I don't own a dog.  Bottomline, there's diarrhea on the sidewalk!!!

To Owner Of Black Dog Poop - Get Your Dog To The Vet

Dear Dog Owner,

Your dog's crap is gross! It's black, and there are multiple dumps all over the place around 17th and Market streets. If you care about your dog, you'll take it to the vet. A common cause of black stool is intestinal bleeding.

Stop leaving your dog's crap around, and take the dog to the vet, please!

Hey poo fighters, if you see this black mess in real time, please comment and report what the dog looks like, so that we can monitor the owner.

Golfing Dog Doo

We went golfing yesterday (Golden Gate Park Golf Course). Usually it's a relaxing, enjoyable walk . . . but watch out for that dog poop! Hello! Was that dog playing golf too?!

Come on!!! Here's what I'm guessing are the possible scenarios:

1. Golfer with pet dog tagging along.
2. In over 1,000 acres of Golden Gate Park, there was no acceptable place for the dog to go, other than the golf course. 
3. Dog owner hates golfers and decided to leave a gift
4. Do you have any other ideas?

Neighbors Victimized By Doggie Doo

I'm back into rant mode.

We were strolling down into the neigbhorhood business district yesterday. I'm happy to say it was wonderfully sunny in SF.

I'm ranting on behalf of the neighborhood, and for the poor souls of a home that I believe is the chronic victim of dog droppings. Not only do they get constant presents, today I noticed they got multiple gifts.

Therefore, I'm starting to get a little militant.  Watch out bad dog owners! We're watching you (between Eureka and Douglass, on 17th St).

Gripe About Dog Doo In The Street

It was wet and rainy today, so I expected the worse for oozing, dripping, running poop.

However, my experience got expanded yet again!  Dodged the usual dog poop, including some petrified doo. Much to my horror, something new...

I'm gathering somebody picked up some doo, and threw it into the street.. and then... it got smeared by cars going by. Criminy!  It's bad enough on the sidewalks, let alone having to dodge it on the streets.

'nuff said.

I Dislike Poo On Shoes

The Noe Valley Fellow Dog Owners Sign - My Pilgrimage Ends In Disappointment

This last Sunday was picture perfect, so I decided to make a pilgrimage. The journey took me to Noe Valley Pet Company, where I was expecting to pay homage to the sign, "Fellow dog owners - Let's do our part to take care of our city."  Alas, the sign was posted no more.

No Rant Today - Rather A Thank You To Responsible Dog Owners

It's Saturday, and the weather is just gorgeous!  Also, I haven't been too riled about dog poop lately.

So for a change of pace, I want to give a post of thanks to responsible dog owners for all that they do (no pun intended):

1. They clean up after their dog(s), and follow proper disposal techniques.
2. They clean up after irresponsible dog owners.
3. They offer clean-up bags to dog owners that need one, or should be using one.
4. For sharing the same passion I have about dog owners that don't do :)  their share to keep spaces free of dog crap.

Kudos to my responsible dog friends!  Are there any other things that they do that we should be thankful for?

Doggie Doo Bagged But Not Thrown Away - How Come?

Every once in awhile, I see bagged-up poo left outside, often at the base of a tree. This seems to be a semi-pattern.  Can anyone out there help me understand what these dog owners are thinking?

On one hand, I'm pleased the doo is bagged. On the otherhand, it's rather unsightly.

Is the semi-pattern occurring because good Samaritan dog owners are picking up behind other owners? Or is there a good reason dog owners sometimes leave the stuff behind outdoors?

Perplexed.

Dog Defecation Ticket Costs More Than Most San Francisco Parking Tickets

On a different note, San Francisco has its own set of problems related to the homeless and their dogs. This was highlighted in today's San Francisco Examiner story, Dogs becoming concern on Haight.

What caught my eye was a listing of the amount of fines when dog laws are violated, resulting in police handing out a ticket. The fine for dog defecation is $319.

I'm glad to see such a hefty fine.  And the truth is, it really is hefty when you compare it to most of the parking ticket fines that are given out in San Francisco, San Francisco CA, Transportation Code - Article 300 Fines and Fees.
