A Surprise Root Cause of Dog Poop - Drive By Doo

The other day I was walking home from work, and witnessed something unexpected, a surprising new explanation for dog pooping.

A car drove up, stopped to park, and out popped a lady with a samll dog (the one you see in the photo). Never one to miss a photo opp, I stopped to wait and watch.  Mostly, I wanted to be present to influence the need to pick-up, should the owner be tempted to dump and run. The poor pup eventually did it right then and there on the sidewalk, much to the lady's chagrin (see 2nd photo).  She had no bag ready, and had to go back to the car for supplies. Kudos to her for making the effort to clean the runny doo.

I must confess that I felt a little guilty. The pup probably wasn't feeling well and needed a pit stop.  On the otherhand, without bag in hand, I suspect this would have been a drive-by dump and run.

Does Warm Weather Promote Dog Doo Land Mines?

Spring has sprung!

The past few days in San Francisco have been wonderful. Sunny, warm, and the neighborhood has been a buzz with lots of activity.

Unfortunately, I've noticed a slight increase in dog poo messes left behind on the sidewalks.  I'm wondering if the warm weather is contributing to this, and why this would be so.

Did SF Plastic Bag Ban Increase Dog Doo Messes?

The other day I was telling a co-worker about this blog.  We compared notes about why there's been an increase in dog droppings left behind. He theorized that perhaps it was caused by the San Francisco ban that stops grocery stores from using plastic bags.

What do you think? Is there any evidence that suggests this might be true?

Top Reasons Dogs Should Be Licensed

According to San Francisco Animal Care and Control, most dogs in San Francisco are unlicensed.

Animal Care and Control gives 5 reasons why dogs should get licensed:

1. If your dog gets lost, a license tag on your dog's collar is the fastest way to reunite you and your dog.
2. Licensing, lets people know that your canine companion has received required vaccinations that protect your dog from rabies.
3. Dog License and license renewal fees keep city animal shelters going.
4. Having a Dog License shows that you are a responsible dog caregiver.
5. It's the law.

Why Dog Doo Should Be Picked Up

While doing (no pun intended) some research to set up this blog, I ran across this excellent post by Mel Freer on the No Dog About It blog, Why You Should Pick Up Your Dog’s Doo-Doos.

Yuck!  Bottomline, dog doo can pass along contagious bacteria and parasites, and is an environmental pollutant.
